1. The concept of Multiliteracy

Have you ever heard of the word "Literacy" before? In modern society, the cocept of "Literacy" is becoming more and more important. Basically, I thought that literacy just meant the ability to "read and write." And I also thought we could get the ability simply by reading and writing lots of texts. However, in modern society, the meaning of "Literacy" has been extended into the concept of "Multiliteracy."

Then, what is "Multiliteracy"? "Multiliteracy" is the ability to understand the meaning of texts not only by reading and writing them but also by understanding the sociocultural context of them. According to the concept of multiliteracy, a meaning is not fixed, but instead variable and changeable in accordance with certain sociocultural factors. Learning standardized way of reading and writing in one's country is very important. But what is more important is to learn various ways of reading and writing based on sociocultural diversity. I realized that it is essential for us to understand (or product) meanings, taking the sociocultural context into account.

In addition, we also have to consider technological advance in modern society. Technology has been improved so much that there emerged numerous ways to communicate with one another. Other than written texts on paper, we use images, videos, graphs, and colors to deliver our messages. Not only understanding the meaning of the messages but also conveying our messages to other people through proper means is the key feature of multiliteracy.

The main factors of multiliteracy

2. The necessity of multiliteracy in learning languages

I came to know that we, as teachers, should design our teaching plan based on "Multiliteracy." Students have to learn how to decode the meaning of various forms of texts and also have to experience a wide range of media while doing their tasks. So, if we get a chance to teach students, we had better use multimodal texts, such as images, pictures, videos, graphs, signs, and so on. And we should try to teach students how to decode the meaning of those texts. Of course, we don't have to give them exact answers. We can make some groups (composed of about 4~5 students each) and encourage them to figure out what those texts mean. In this process, students can get the ability to comprehend the meaning of the texts and learn how to collaborate with other students while solving certain problems. Furthermore, we should arrange discussion section and let students share their opinions. While discussing, their critical thinking power will be raised and they will earn the ability to grasp the core of others' opinions as well.

In the process of teaching languages, reading and writing is very important. But we should keep in mind that the concept of "Multiliteracy" should be based on the process of teaching languages. Students should learn how to deliver their messeage through proper ways as well as how to understand the various forms of texts properly. If you are interested in teaching languages, how about making a teaching plan based on the concept of "Multiliteracy"?
